Our Story

Paula and Ray Baxter have run Mill Pond Flower Farm on a four acre smallholding near Foulden in the Scottish Borders for the past 12 years.

We're not traditional farmers or florists. We’ve learned all of the skills to create a flower farm business from scratch. It’s been a wonderful journey and we’ve met some amazing people along the way. We are proud and passionate about making a living from the business of growing flowers on our small piece of land.

The whole process happens at Mill Pond Flower Farm. The flowers are grown here - we build the soil, sow the seeds, nurture the plants, cut the flowers, condition and arrange them. We grow what does well here, mostly outside and always without herbicides or pesticides. In a typical year we will supply more than 250 species of plants and many thousands of stems.

We have limited stocks, purely what's already planted in the flower field . We plan well, and often a year or more ahead, to make sure we have the flowers we need, but when we've reached our limit of orders for the week, we close our order book.

We offer a personal service. When you phone or visit, it'll be Paula or Ray you’ll speak to.

Paula

Found outside in all weathers, growing is her default, flowers a bit of an obsession.

Paula has been active in promoting and developing the UK locally grown flowers movement since 2013. She was Co-Chair of Flowers from the Farm in 2018-19 and Scotland co-ordinator for 5 years.

As part of The Business of Selling Flowers, alongside Carol Siddorn of Carol’s Garden and Claire Brown of Plantpassion, Paula also teaches flower farming in person and online.

Pest Control

The rodent control team at Mill Pond Flower Farm, they’re hard to tell apart but are very different characters. Excellent at their job, if a little too enthusiastic sometimes.
